Released in May 2008, Set by the Sea is a album of original and standard jazz material recorded during the summer of 2007. This collection of toe-tapping swing and groovin' funk tunes illustrates the trio's rhythmic sensibilities and eclectic range. As a bonus, the last track features trumpeter Anilh Rameshwar and tenor saxophonist Andy Zahurak performing Chuck Walker's original composition, Good Evening.

CW3 Biography

Bryan Gambell (bass), Fenimore Johnson (drums), and Chuck Walker (guitar)

Guitarist Chuck Walker has been performing and composing music for over a decade on California's west coast. Since "cutting his teeth" in the San Francisco jazz scene in the late 90's with the likes of Bradford Marsalis and John Handy, Chuck has extensively performed in Los Angeles and San Diego. His subtly aggressive guitar style bridges the genres of jazz, blues, funk, reggae, dub, rock, and pop. As a composer, Chuck's inventive and playful manner often contrasts a deeper, more bluesy side of his creativity.

Determined to assemble a versatile rhythm section of high caliber and adaptability in 2005, Chuck recruited bassist Bryan Gambell and drummer Fenimore Johnson. As a small unit, the trio's musical flexibility allows them to perform a wide range of original and standard material as well as feature special guest instrumentalists and vocalists. Bryan's calculating instincts compliment Chuck's organic expression, while Fenimore's funky sensibilities balance and anchor the group.

Since the formation of the Chuck Walker Trio, the group has hosted numerous Jazz Forum Open Mic Sessions throughout San Diego and featured many artists like vocalists Karin Carson, Cookie Coe & Rich Ross, keyboardist Chris Neale, flugelhornist Don Shaffer, trumpeter/keyboardist Anilh Rameshwar, tenor saxophonist Andy Zahurak, tenor saxophonist Billy Allen, pianist Dr. Carl Hammond, alto saxophonist Deborah Clark, and guitarists Larry Middlebrooks and Kevin Berg.

The Chuck Walker Trio is committed to bringing the best improvisational music to the stage every time. Whether in a trio setting or larger context, the Chuck Walker Trio continues to excite audiences with their musical versatility, unending creativity, and original artistry.

Jazz at Adams Elementary 6/12/6

Students of Adams Elementary enjoyed an afternoon of Jazz on Monday, June 12, 2006 with the Chuck Walker Trio. A discussion of jazz history accompanied an hour performance, demonstrating different types of jazz rhythms. Sounds of Swing, Funk, Afro-Cuban, and Bossa Nova filled the auditorium as students listened to the compositions of pianist, Thelonious Monk, saxophonist, Sonny Rollins, and Brazilian composer, Antonio Carlos Jobim. Students got the opportunity to see the instruments up close, ask questions, and learn more about them. A few lucky students got a chance to play Fenimore's drums and Chuck's guitar.
